We can see the materials are grouped and sorted in an ascending order of floors, and in the bottom here, we can see the grand totals of the concrete volume of columns for the entire building. Then in the “Custom grand total title” textbox, let us input “Grand total.” Ok, now open the “Formatting” tab, in the “Fields” box, select “Material: Volume.” Then select “Calculate totals” in this drop-down menu and click on “OK.” Now let us take a look at the schedule. Check “Grand totals” in the bottom area and select “Title and totals” in the pull-down menu. In this way, we can group the column by their base levels. In the “Sort by” drop-down menu, select “Base Level,” and choose “Ascending.” Check “Header” and “Footer,” and select “Totals only” in this drop-down menu. On the “Properties” palette, click the “Edit” button in the “Sorting/Grouping” field. Next, we need to show the total material volume of each floor, and the total material volume of the whole building. Now the material takeoff schedule calculates the material volume based on the types of materials used by the elements. In the “Available fields” box, select “Family and Type,” “Material: Name,” “Material: Volume,” “Base Level,” and “Top Level.” Then add these parameters into the “Scheduled fields” box. Then click on “OK.” Now you can see the “Material Takeoff Properties” dialog pop-up. Click on the “Schedules” drop-down menu and select “Material Takeoff.” In the “New Material Takeoff” dialog, select “Structural Columns” in the “Category” box. Under the “View” tab, find the “Create” panel.

In this case, these elements are columns, walls, beams, floors, and stairs. When estimating the amount of concrete needed, first, we have to find out the building elements of the material of concrete.

In this session, we are going to estimate the amount of concrete needed only for the third floor in the model, as an example, to demonstrate how to create material takeoff schedules.
